BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA – Togonon Gallery will feature
a ten year retrospective of Bay Area Artist, Terry Acebo Davis on
view from September 6 – 27, 2003 at Babilonia 1808 -1808 Fifth
Street, off University Avenue.
Commenting on her art Acebo Davis explains
“I draw upon my identity as a woman of Filipina-American extraction
influenced by Euro-American contemporary thought as inspiration
for my work.” Distinct colors such as vermillion reds, yellow
ochres and lamp blacks; and symbols such as crosses, numbers, foreign
words, grids and maps are used consistently throughout her art series.
“Whether it be realized in the form of an intimate work on
paper or in a room sized tableaux, the multidisciplinary works of
Terry Acebo Davis always challenge their viewers to look and think
deeply.” states Mark Van Proyen, noted Art Critic in the introduction
to her catalog.
With advanced degrees in both Fine Arts and Health
Care, Acebo Davis has traveled extensively and has found ways to combine
her careers with creative discipline. Last year she completed a three
site multi-media installation and short documentary film tracing immigration
through the eyes of the Filipino Healthcare Workers and the Filipino War
Veterans of WWII. For this and her graphic works she was recently awarded
the Arts Council of Silicon Valley Fellowship, these works are currently
on display at the Triton Museum in Santa Clara. Her other awards include
the James Phelan Award for Printmaking, a Community Foundation of Silicon
Valley Grant, Fellowship at the Kala Institute in Berkeley and the Radius
Award from the City of Palo Alto. For the past six years Acebo Davis has
also traveled to Belgium to work as an Artist in Residence at the Masereel
Center working in traditional printmaking media: stone lithographs and
serigraphs. Acebo Davis has exhibited her work in Germany, Belgium, the
Philippines and throughout the United States and Hawaii; and she has lectured
to audiences at home and abroad about the state of Filipino American Contemporary
Art.
